Guji Hambela was produced by the Adinew family, from the METAD group – who are third generation coffee producers striving to develop high quality coffee with a vision to protect both the environment and the community to which they belong. The group works together with 700 smallholder farmers located near their Hambela washing station from whom they source their coffee cherries and provide continuous support throughout the year.
This lot of Guji Hambela beans was grown in the fertile Guji zone - Oromia region, bordered in the south with Borena and in the north by Gedeo and Sidama. This area has an average temperature of 18 degrees Celsius, where coffee beans are grown at elevations between 1900 to 2200 metres in an area that provides ideal conditions owing to the rich nutrients in their red volcanic soil. The range of floral and fruit qualities that characterise coffee from this region is stunning.
The group works closely with the community through employment (70% of employees are women). In addition, local community ties are strengthened through scholarships for primary to university education for nearly 700 students and healthcare programs for women in coffee-growing communities.
Apart from producing excellent coffee, the group is also responsible for environmental projects that maintain the ecosystems, such as their beekeeping programme – which has proven to be a valuable resource for coffee farming, increasing quality and yield after the pollination of the bees during the flowering stage.
This lot of Hambela was processed using the natural method - where the ripe cherries were carefully selected and dried on raised beds for about 2 weeks or until the moisture content reached 12%. This process highlights the floral and fruity notes with flavours of dried pineapple and blueberry preserves.
