Origin and tasting notes

This lot was produced by 52 smallholder farmers from the municipality of Inzá, in Colombia's Cauca state. It comprises of several micro-lots from the neighbouring towns of Pedregal and San Antonio. Farm sizes in this region average around 1-2 hectares and the stringent standards result in very limited quantities of this exceptional blend, which is made up of 70% Caturra and 30% Colombia varieties.

We have been purchasing Inzá coffees seasonally over the past 4 years and have grown to appreciate the consistent depth of flavour and sweetness that characterise this region's coffees. This season's offering is noted for its lively acidity and juicy fruit flavours of grapes, currants and raspberries – making it a delicious coffee for pour-over, Aeropress, french press and cold brew.

More about Inzá

The town of Inzá is located in the Department of Cauca, bordering with Tolima and Huila and looking out to the west over the Pacific Ocean. Situated on the “Macizo Colombiano” (the Colombian Plateau), the region is an important source of water and wildlife, in addition to being prime coffee growing land.

The region's troubled past posed by armed conflict has given way to a period of relative calm made possible by renewed peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC rebels which began in 2012. With improved access, small producers are better able to pool together their harvests and market them as community lots to specialty buyers attracted to the region's potential for great coffee.

This specific lot was sourced through Pergamino, who have established themselves as an important link between smallholder farmers and the specialty market of importers and roasters. The premiums that Pergamino pays to the farmers range from 30-300% above market prices (depending on cupping score and volume). They also work with local partners to invest in resources that enable small producers to access quality improvement programmes for their crops, thereby increasing the premiums at which they can be sold.

Each season, samples are sent by producers to the cupping lab where a team trained by Pergamino assesses the quality and cup profile of each lot. In this way, direct feedback on each lot is made available to the producer and represents an important channel for farmers to obtain information about the quality of their crop and connect with potential buyers.

We are proud to bring you this selection of Inzá coffee, and to share in its amazing journey from farm to your cup.
